Paleochora
Gialiskari Beach Paleochora Sunset in town
Paleochora is located on a peninsula, on the south-western corner of the island of Crete, Greece.
Greece
The town is washed by the waters of the Libyan Sea, and looks onto the distant island of Gavdos - the most southerly point of Europe. Although not visible, the shores of Africa lie just 400km away helping to give the south of Crete its tropical style climate for 10 months of the year.
Paleochora was a haven to the Hippies of the 60's & 70's, and because of its geographical location across the mountains of central Crete, it has remained a small town practically untouched by mass tourism.

The town has a permanent population of approximately 2,000 inhabitants who still make a living from farming or fishing, and in the height of the season provide the town with its tourist services.
In Paleochora you will find many cafe bars and tavernas serving a variety of cuisines (including vegetarian), travel agent services, car hire, post office, well stocked supermarkets, 2 fresh fish shops, 3 banks with ATMs, an out of town nightclub, pharmacies, an internet cafe, an international press kiosk and an open air cinema.
The pace in Paleochora is slow & gentle. To reflect this, the main street & sea front road are closed to traffic each evening. The traffic is replaced by tables and chairs from the bars & restaurants - then the evening 'Volta' (stroll) can begin.
